The golden rule of stain removal is speed. The longer a stain sits, the more it bonds with the fibres and the harder it becomes to remove. Act fast, stay calm, and follow the right treatment for the specific stain — never just rub it harder.

Before You Start: The Rules

Oil & Grease Stains

  1. Sprinkle baking soda or talcum powder generously over the stain and leave for 20 minutes to absorb the oil.
  2. Brush off the powder, then apply a small amount of washing-up liquid directly to the stain.
  3. Gently work it in with your fingers, then wash at the hottest temperature the label allows.

Red Wine & Juice

  1. Blot up as much liquid as possible immediately.
  2. Pour a little cold sparkling water over the stain to dilute it.
  3. Apply table salt generously and leave for five minutes.
  4. Rinse with cold water, then soak in diluted biological detergent for 30 minutes before washing.

Never use hot water on a fresh wine stain — it will set the tannins permanently into the fabric.

Blood Stains

Blood contains protein that hot water will fix into the fabric. Always use cold water.

  1. Rinse under cold running water as soon as possible.
  2. Make a paste of salt and cold water, apply to the stain, and leave for 10 minutes.
  3. For dried blood, soak in cold water with biological detergent for an hour before washing.

Grass Stains

  1. Pre-treat with a biological liquid detergent, working it gently into the stain.
  2. Leave for at least 15 minutes.
  3. Wash at 40°C with a biological detergent.
