Regular cleaning keeps your home looking presentable. Deep cleaning keeps it genuinely hygienic. The difference is getting into all the places you normally skip — behind appliances, inside cupboards, under furniture, and into grout lines and soft furnishings that harbour dust mites and bacteria.
Most households benefit from a thorough deep clean every three to six months.
What You Will Need
- All-purpose cleaner and bathroom cleaner
- White vinegar — natural degreaser and disinfectant
- Bicarbonate of soda — deodoriser and mild abrasive
- Microfibre cloths, mop, and old toothbrush
- Rubber gloves and a vacuum with attachments
Kitchen
- Cupboards: Empty completely, wipe inside with all-purpose cleaner, check expiry dates.
- Oven: Remove racks and soak in hot soapy water. Apply oven cleaner to interior, leave as directed, wipe clean. For light build-up, a paste of bicarbonate of soda and water works well.
- Fridge: Remove all contents and shelves, wash with warm soapy water, wipe interior with bicarbonate of soda solution.
- Hob and extractor: Degrease thoroughly. Soak metal extractor filters in hot water with washing-up liquid.
- Sink: Use a non-scratch cleaner on the basin; bicarbonate of soda mixed with vinegar on taps for limescale.
Bathroom
- Toilet: Apply cleaner inside the bowl and leave. Wipe the outside including the underside of the seat and hinges before scrubbing the bowl.
- Tiles and grout: Apply grout cleaner or a bicarbonate paste to grout lines and scrub with an old toothbrush.
- Shower head: Fill a bag with white vinegar, attach around the shower head with a rubber band, leave for an hour.
Bedrooms
- Wash all bedding including duvets, pillows, and mattress protectors at 60°C to kill dust mites.
- Vacuum the mattress, sprinkle with bicarbonate of soda, leave for an hour, then vacuum off.
- Dust ceiling fans, light fittings, and the tops of wardrobes.
Living Areas
- Vacuum sofas and cushions. For fabric sofas, sprinkle with bicarbonate of soda, leave 20 minutes, then vacuum off.
- Wipe all surfaces, remote controls, light switches, and door handles.
- Clean windows inside and out.
Light switches and door handles are touched dozens of times a day but almost never cleaned. They carry more bacteria per square centimetre than a toilet seat.
